What is CNC Machining?

CNC stands for computer numerical control and is a manufacturing process in which pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of industrial tools to cut and form materials. The types of tools that use this method include mills, lathes, routers and grinders.

CNC machining is a form of subtractive manufacturing. This means the workpiece is shaped by removing materials as opposed to additive manufacturing such as injection moulding / 3d printing, where the material is formed to create parts.

What is CNC Machining

How Does it Work?

CNC relies on digital instructions from computer-aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks. CAD drawings set a roadmap for the design, and the CNC interprets the design as instructions.

CNC machines are programmed with a CNC machining language known as G-code. G-code is essential for controlling features such as feed rate, coordination, location and speeds.

Benefits of CNC Machining:

  • Highly accurate & Repeatable Results

  • Useful for creating complex three-dimensional shapes

  • Produces little to no waste

  • Must faster lead times compared to manual machining

Types of CNC Machines

CNC mills cut and drill material based on a CAD drawing. Based on the project, a variety of machines can be used to attack the workpiece from various axis to fashion parts with high accuracy. For more information or to view our milling machines, please view our CNC milling page.

CNC lathes are used for turning purposes. The workpiece is held in place and rotated by a spindle as the cutting tool removes unwanted material until a final product remains. For more information, check out our CNC Turning page.

Electrical discharge machining utilises high voltage electrical arching to remove unwanted material from a workpiece made of non-conductive material.

Plasma Cutters:

Plasma cutting is only used on conductive materials such as mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Plasma cutters use a plasma torch to cut materials.
