Perth Copper Machining
What is Copper?
Copper is a thermally and electrically conductive metal that is primarily used in electrical equipment and plumbing.
Unlike other materials, copper can be difficult to machine due to its ductility, plasticity, and toughness. However, alloying copper can make it easier to machine than other metals.
Copper can be sourced in shim, sheet, and rod, and is machinable to customer specifications. Copper can also be silver plated if required.

Copper Properties
Copper Advantages and Disadvantages
Copper is a great material for thermal and electrical conductivity.
Copper’s main advantageous properties are:
-
Formable (ductile and malleable)
-
High thermal and electrical conductivity
-
Resistance to corrosion in most environments
-
Possible antibacterial properties
-
High flexibility
-
High conformity
-
Lightweight
-
Durability
-
Recyclability
-
Affordability
One disadvantage of copper is that it can corrode when exposed to oxidising acids, oxidising heavy metal salts, sulphur, and ammonia. This can result in copper degrading and becoming the stereotypical green colour.

Copper Examples and Applications
Copper’s advantageous properties make it perfect for a variety of applications.
Common copper applications include:
-
Earthing pins, candles, and switch contacts
-
Switchgear and transformer parts
-
Flexi joints
-
Contact sets
-
Busbars
-
Test plugs
-
Washers (if annealed or heat treated)
