Perth Nylon Machining

What is Nylon?

Nylon refers to a family of synthetic polymers that we recommend for lightweight and robust parts.

The material is an engineering plastic that is chemically resistant, long-lasting, and useful for many applications.

Nylon’s polymers contain amide groups and are called polyamides. This molecular structure contributes to nylon’s many benefits.

Nylon can be sourced in tube, rod, and sheet form, and is machinable to customer specifications.

Nylon Properties

Nylon Advantages and Disadvantages

Nylon is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic, which means it has strong chemical resistance.

Nylon’s main advantageous properties are:

  • Strength, stiffness, hardness, and toughness

  • Moderate temperature resistance

  • Vibration absorption (high mechanical damping capacity)

  • Low friction and wear

  • Long-lasting (high fatigue and wear resistance)

  • Lightweight

  • Relatively affordable

Nylon is available in two main categories, Nylatron and Ertalon. Manufacturers narrow down these groups to the following specific grades:

  • Ertalon SA 6

  • Ertalon SA 66

  • Ertalon 6 PLA

  • Ertalon 4.6

  • Ertalon LFX

  • Nylatron GSM

Each product has specific properties that make it best for certain applications. If you would like to learn more, please feel free to call us on +61 (08) 9209 3866

One disadvantage of nylon is its low UV resistance. Nylon also melts easily, and can lose strength and stiffness when wet.

What is Nylon Used For?

Nylon Examples and Applications

Nylon's advantageous properties make it perfect for a variety of applications.

Common nylon applications include:

  • Reinforcement in rubber material

  • Gears

  • Bearings (with high load)

  • Wear and buffer pads

  • Plumbing fittings, fixtures, and other construction applications

  • Guide and support wheels

  • Conveyer and tension rollers
